How a simple idea to protect traveling journals turned into something much bigger
If you’ve ever participated in a traveling journal project, then you already know the magic that happens when women create together.
You send out a journal filled with pieces of yourself; your art, your thoughts, your creativity, your time and little by little it travels from sister to sister, becoming something beautifully collaborative along the way.
But if you’ve also participated in enough of them… you know the heartbreak too.
Journals sometimes disappear. Life happens. Shipping costs rise. People move. Packages get lost. And occasionally, a journal carrying months of creativity and memories simply never makes its way home again.
That reality is actually where Sisterhood Shuffle idea began.
Originally, I wasn’t trying to build a movement or a community website or an entire creative ecosystem. I was simply trying to solve a problem that so many of us in the journaling and happy mail world have quietly experienced:
How do we preserve the magic of collaborative creativity without risking an entire journal?
At the same time, I kept thinking about accessibility and inclusion.
I wanted something anyone could participate in:
more affordable,
less overwhelming,
easier to mail,
beginner friendly,
and sustainable long term.
Because not everyone can afford to repeatedly ship large journals around the country (or world). And not everyone has the time or emotional bandwidth to work in a full journal every month. But almost anyone can create:
one beautiful 5x7 page.
And that tiny shift changed everything.... Instead of mailing entire journals, what if sisters simply exchanged handmade pages with one another?
What if each woman created:
a page,
a pocket,
a collage,
a letter,
a story,
a little piece of herself…
…and mailed it to another sister in the group?
Over time, every participant could build their own collaborative journal full of art, encouragement, memories, and creativity from women all over the community.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized this wasn’t just a workaround.
It was actually something different.
Something softer. Something more accessible. Something more sustainable. And maybe… something even more connected, like penpals from around the globe.
Because unlike traditional traveling journals, Sisterhood Shuffle allows more women to participate without the fear of ruining someone’s book, losing a journal, or spending large amounts on shipping.
It lowers the pressure while keeping the magic. And honestly? I had no idea how deeply this idea would resonate until I shared it online and woke up to hundreds of views and comments from women saying:
“I’ve been looking for something exactly like this.”
That’s when I realized Sisterhood Shuffle wasn’t just about paper crafting anymore.
It was about:
connection,
storytelling,
kindness,
creativity,
and creating spaces where women feel seen, welcomed, and inspired.
In a world that feels increasingly disconnected, there’s something deeply meaningful about opening your mailbox and finding a handmade piece of art created by another woman who took the time to make something just for you.
That’s the heart of this entire project.
Not perfection. Not performance. Not competition.
Just creativity, connection, and kindness — one handmade page at a time.
And that’s how Sisterhood Shuffle began.
